INSIGHT
A deeply Buddhist and uniquely peaceful country, Laos continues to observe the customs of this ancient religion like nowhere else in Asia. Throughout the year various festivals and events take place, ranging from the picturesque and magical That Luang Festival to the downright riotous and joyful Lao Pi Mai.
A truly diverse country, Laos is home to over 49 distinct ethnic groups. The Tai Lao majority group gives this country its name and national language but is in fact only just over half the population. There are also the Akha, whose women wear spectacular silver headdresses, the Hmong, whose lunar New Year celebrations are a time of courtship and colour, and the Khmu, the indigenous people of Laos and master bamboo weavers.
A country with a rich and sometimes traumatic history, the legacy of ancient Buddhist royalty sits alongside beautiful French Indochinese colonial relics. After many years of war and turmoil, a new generation of young monks meditates in the temples, French villas are lovingly restored, royal history is being remembered and young Lao look forward to a new era of development and independence in the modern world.
